Lifeline Gippsland — a subsidiary of Lifeline Australia — is a mental health help and suicide prevention support network for people in regional Victoria. They provide a range of services for individuals and families in crisis, fostering a network that uplifts the broader community, letting them know that they don’t have to face hardship alone.

The Opportunity

Through support from the Gippsland Primary Health Network, Lifeline led an initiative as part of the Gippsland Alcohol and Drug and Suicide Prevention Resource Project to provide greater access to mental health resources.

After an initial phase of research and stakeholder engagement, Lifeline found that the need was not for more resources but rather a better way to find the resources that already exist. So, they approached Speckle with the challenge of displaying dozens of support services in a way that people could easily navigate during times of crisis to find the support they need.

Forever eager to tackle social good challenges, we were thrilled to be provided with the opportunity to lend our expertise in creating what would soon become the Gippsland Mental Health Support Directory.

The Process

We kicked off the project with our discovery session with the Lifeline Gippsland team. We used this time to unpack and understand their knowledge surrounding mental health services in a Gippsland context, their stakeholder engagement findings and research in the initial stages of the project, and how this information could be translated into an online resource.

Working with the Lifeline Gippsland team, we workshopped the idea that the resource could take the form of a digital support directory, surfacing resources across areas of support to help users quickly find what they need.

It hosts the contact information of around 70 different mental health support and suicide prevention organisations, which help a wide range of community groups across all races, genders, ages, religions, abilities, identities and experiences.

The stakeholder group reiterated just how important it is that the site included people from all walks of life. Rather than using photography, we designed custom illustrations in a style that utilised the brand colours to create diverse characters that people could see themselves in.

After the site was launched, we’ve continued to support Lifeline Gippsland to ensure the Gippsland Mental Health Support Directory was found by those who needed it. We created online ads through Google and Facebook and printed flyers to raise awareness and ongoing user engagement. The support directory also runs a survey for users to keep improving the site and make sure that this service will continue to support the Gippsland community.

The Outcome

It was an absolute pleasure working alongside the wonderful team at Lifeline Gippsland, and we were thrilled with the outcome of the project. The website and ad campaigns launched were a great success, with data showing that people easily found the site and got the resources they needed. Social good projects are a passion of Speckle’s, and we couldn’t have been happier to offer our services on this project.
